Chapter 7
Mark slammed the locker door with more force than was necessary. But he was furious. Skye was gone and his whole world was off-kilter. She’d been gone for two months now and he still couldn’t stop thinking about her, wondering if she was okay, if she was hurt. He’d done a search to check on all of the accidents in the area, but there’d been none that included a woman with Skye’s description. The note she’d left for him read, “I can’t do this,” without any explanation.
She’d left in the middle of the night and, because she’d lost her phone the previous day, he couldn’t even call her to find out if she was okay or where she’d gone. She’d just…disappeared! It felt as if every moment of his life was spent thinking about her.
“Something going on, LT?”
Mark turned, ready to rip off the team member’s head. But it was Sam, his second in command. “No,” he growled and walked out. Sam followed. “You don’t seem like yourself,” he commented. “Woman problems?”
Mark turned around, his finger pointing into Sam’s face. “Back off!” he snapped.
Sam held up his hands, backing away. “Hey. Just trying to help. Call me when you’re ready to talk.”
Mark wanted to slug someone. Not talk. Or better yet, find Skye. He fingered the note in his pocket, which he carried with him at all times, trying to figure it out. What couldn’t she do? And why couldn’t she have explained that to his face? Why couldn’t they have talked about whatever was bothering her? He understood that he’d scared her that day. That had been obvious from the moment she’d opened the door.
But hell, she’d just…left! After months together, he’d thought they were heading towards something important. Damn it, he’d bought a ring! He’d been planning a proposal dinner!
But instead of the romantic dinner, he’d spent the day trying to figure out what he’d done wrong! He’d called the building manager, but the apartment where she’d been staying was listed on one of those internet sites for short term rentals and they wouldn’t release her information without a court order. Since Skye hadn’t done anything wrong, a court order wasn’t forthcoming.
There were several ways he could look her up, but…hell, they were all illegal.
He considered hitting a bar and getting drunk, but he’d done that almost every night for a week after she’d left. After he’d gotten sick of waking up with a hangover, he’d accepted that drinking himself to death wasn’t a good option for getting over Skye.
Besides, he didn’t want to go to a bar again. He didn’t want to be around other people. Instead, he pulled on sweats and his running shoes and headed out into the night. Normally, running cleared his head and helped him think through issues. But it wasn’t working tonight. After ten miles, he slowed down and headed back to his place. A shower didn’t help either. He couldn’t sleep, worrying about Skye, wondering where she was. Was she
